This is the new blog of Fabien Butazzi aka @fabienb.

I read somewhere that the English-speaking people are the worst at learning new languages because theirs is so universal that they don't even bother to try.
Myself (not English), if I could only choose one superpower, it would be to speak all the languages in the world.
But not knowing one language (or having extremely limited knowledge) has never prevented me from communicating with locals.
It happened for example in Seoul, where I spent a couple hours photographing sunset with a 76 years old fantastic man who knew no English (and I know no South Korean, other than hello and thank you). We communicated first with hands and face expressions and then with google translate on my phone.
And it's happened with this brilliant man in Barcelona who accepted to have his portrait taken under this gorgeous morning light (also, the detail of the morning absinthe...). Again, he didn't even try to speak anything other than Catalan 😁

I will cherish photography forever for it makes me connect with people in unimaginable ways, breaking every possible barrier. 😍
This is what today's portrait means to me.

I haven’t always been one to ask strangers if I could take their portraits in the street. And even if now it gets a tad easier and I always use the same tips I already told you in my YouTube video, I’m still very much a shy individual and just walk away without taking the photo.
Then when I do take the photo, there’s a whole lot of other issues tied to shooting in the street: crowds, light, ugly backgrounds, etc. And because I love to shoot in harsh light (simply because I love to be out when it’s sunny and hot), the person in front of my camera would probably like to protect their eyes, making eye contact one more challenge.
So when I went back home and saw that in this image I could actually see one eye looking right at me, I was over the moon.
This dude was already a phenomenal subject, and now I got his eye in the shot! YESS!
So here’s one more portrait for you. I haven’t been too prolific with social media lately (have I ever been?) but I’ll try to catch up now because I have so much content to share. It will happen :)

So I guess it’s going to be portraits now… I’ve taken a few lately and I’m really enjoying finally being able to overcome my “fear” of strangers in the streets. It’s odd because in my travels I long for the human connection, to meet new people and embrace new cultures. And yet, as a photographer, it was always hard to simply ask. There’s always the fear of rejection, but in the end is it such a bad thing? Of course it’s a shame if a person who would make for a fantastic portrait decides they don’t want to be photographed, but it’s in their rights. But more often than not, people actually say yes and it can even be a conversation starter (even if you don’t speak each other’s language, it’s happened).
I will still take candid shots when it seems right to do it, but I’m more than happy to ask someone for their consent or to pose, 100%

I did publish a video on YouTube on my tips to photograph strangers, the same tips I followed myself to approach people successfully. I will soon make a follow-up because I want to talk about some other aspects of shooting in the streets.
I just need to finally finish the Istanbul video that is taking forever (200+ clips, 4+ hours, …) and then I’ll move to that.

In the meantime, portraits time. And you may have noticed in the stories that self-portraits are making an appearance too… who knows where this will lead me… 😅

Of course I had to find a way to shoot one of my sun alignments in Istanbul as well! It is unfortunately a bit too late in the year to photograph the sunrise I wanted against Ayasofya but there are still a couple ideas I want to explore if the weather cooperates.
Here I found this alignment with the sun setting behind the Galata tower and to me it's interesting that this comes straight after the One Canada Square I did in London just before leaving (it was in my Stories but may find way to the feed too eventually) because it's pretty much the same pointy shape.

I met with a local photographer here @seforotti_travel who was taking the same shot, a guy that worships "Sunsetism" and got me hooked to it immediately 😄

So, yeah, cross your fingers tight for me and hope the weather will stay nice so I can shoot more of these before I go back home. Thanks.
